Breaking: Man Detained in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance Case Released - What We Know So Far (2026)

A chilling mystery surrounds the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, and the latest developments have only deepened the intrigue! A man initially detained by authorities in Arizona for questioning in connection with Nancy Guthrie's vanishing has reportedly been released. This individual, who identified himself as Carlos Palazuelos, stated he was the person stopped in a traffic incident on Tuesday near Rio Rico, a town about an hour's drive from the Tucson area where Ms. Guthrie, aged 84, was reported missing on February 1st.

Palazuelos, speaking from what he described as his wife and mother-in-law's home in Rio Rico, expressed his hope that authorities would find the actual suspect, asserting, "I hope they get the suspect, because I’m not it." He also claimed to have had no prior knowledge of the case, adding a layer of mystery to his involvement.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department had announced late Tuesday night, nine days after Ms. Guthrie went missing, that they had "detained a subject during a traffic stop" and that this person was "being questioned in connection with the Nancy Guthrie investigation." Sheriff Chris Nanos of Pima County confirmed that his deputies, along with the FBI, conducted a "court-authorized search" in Rio Rico, a town situated close to the Mexican border. However, Sheriff Nanos provided no specific details regarding the search, and an update on X early Wednesday indicated that "No press conference is scheduled at this time."

While there was no official confirmation of the individual's release from the FBI or Pima County officials by early Wednesday morning, Angelica Carrillo, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department, informed The Times that investigators had "completed their search of a property in Rio Rico."

These significant developments followed the FBI's release on Tuesday afternoon of "previously inaccessible" still images and a 44-second video. These captured a person in a ski mask lurking at the doorstep of Nancy Guthrie's residence in the Catalina Foothills area, north of Tucson, on the morning of her disappearance, as recorded by her doorbell camera.

The black-and-white photographs show a masked figure, clad in gloves and a backpack, approaching the house's entrance. In one striking image, the individual appears to be waving what looks like a plant, and in another, they are seen beginning to dismantle the Nest camera itself.

But here's where it gets controversial... Sheriff Nanos had previously voiced his frustration to reporters regarding the pace of obtaining crucial imagery. As the search entered its second full week on Monday, he remarked, "I wish technology was as easy as we believe it is, that here’s a picture, here’s your bad guy. But it’s not." This sentiment highlights the complex reality of modern investigations, where digital evidence isn't always straightforward to acquire or interpret.

The breakthrough was announced on Tuesday by FBI Director Kash Patel, who stated on X, "Working with our partners, as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera."

Also on Tuesday, the FBI announced a $50,000 reward for "information leading to the recovery of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance."

Detectives have conducted numerous searches of Ms. Guthrie's house, which was designated "a crime scene" early in the investigation, as well as the surrounding areas. At least one vehicle has been removed, and drone footage captured FBI agents using a pole to investigate a septic tank.

Savannah Guthrie, a familiar face as a host on NBC's Today show since 2012, has used social media to make heartfelt appeals for her mother's safe return. She has spoken of the special bond she shares with her mother, particularly after the loss of her father when Savannah was a teenager.

Nancy Guthrie has mobility challenges and requires regular medication for her survival, her daughter has shared. The case has become a focal point of frustration and considerable intrigue in the days since her disappearance.

Investigators discovered blood on the doorstep and have been looking into the authenticity of several notes reportedly demanding a $6 million ransom in cryptocurrency from the Guthrie family. Savannah Guthrie stated in one of her video appeals, "We will pay."

One of the notes, sent to an Arizona television station last week, purportedly included a deadline for payment by Monday afternoon, a deadline that passed without incident. And this is the part most people miss... In a truly bizarre turn of events, someone was observed attempting to deliver a pizza to the Guthrie residence, only for it to be revealed that the pizza had been ordered by reporters covering the story. The Pima County Sheriff's Department took to X to address the situation, posting, "We can’t believe we have to say this, but media on scene: please do not order food delivery to a crime scene address. This interferes with an active investigation."

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, the department had posted on X, "No suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles have been identified."
