The crisis was triggered by a combination of factors, including the University of Cape Coast's (UCC) graduation ceremonies and the vacation of senior high schools, which overwhelmed the city's roads and transport stations. The situation was particularly challenging at the Total lorry station, where the manager, Mr. Kwame Asare, likened the scene to a river bursting its banks, with passengers pouring in faster than they could be transported.
The traffic jam stretched from UCC's East Gate through Pedu Junction to Aggrey Memorial Senior High and ended at the outskirts of Yamoransa near the Biriwa barrier. Many passengers stood motionless by the roadside, anxiously waving down scarce vehicles. Mr. Samuel Okyere, the station manager at Tantri, described the scene as a sea of weary faces by dawn. He outlined plans to alleviate the pressure, including coordinating with extra drivers from nearby stations and urging passengers to book ahead via apps.
Among the crowd were frustrated travelers like Mr. Kofi Armah, a trader from Kumasi, who had been waiting since 6:00 am. Ms. Adwoa Boateng, a nurse traveling to Takoradi, echoed the sentiment, trapped in the vehicular prison with no end in sight. One particularly harrowing case involved a passenger named Young Yaw Mensah, who attended a UCC graduation but failed to secure transport and had to return to campus to spend the night there.
Some drivers blamed the ongoing construction on the Kasoa-Winneba stretch of the Accra-Takoradi highway for prolonging travel times amid the heavy traffic surge. A driver, Nana Osei, stuck in the snarl, fumed, "this Kasoa mess has turned a two-hour trip into a full-day torture with dust everywhere and passengers piling up like forgotten luggage."
The crisis highlighted the challenges of managing transportation during peak periods and the impact of various factors on travel plans. It also underscored the need for effective coordination and communication between transport authorities and travelers to ensure a smoother travel experience.
