A quiet UK seaside town is facing a potential crisis: the introduction of parking charges that could devastate its beloved high street. Clevedon, a picturesque town known for its iconic pier and filming locations, is bracing itself for a significant change. But will this change be for the better?
This year, North Somerset Council plans to end free parking on several streets, a move that has sparked outrage among local business owners, despite a petition signed by over 4,000 people.
Independent shop owners are already struggling, and this new cost could be the final straw. Mark White, from Clevedon Music Shop, shared his concerns, stating that the charges are 'ridiculous' and could deter visitors who currently choose Clevedon over Bristol to avoid parking fees.
He also pointed out the council's previous costly mistake with the seafront road layout, which the RAC called 'bizarre,' costing a staggering £1.3 million initially, with an additional £375,000 to correct the error.
But here's where it gets controversial... Locals suspect that the parking charges are a way to recoup the money lost on the failed road scheme. The new charges will affect areas like Hill Road, Alexandra Road, Bellevue Road, and Gardens Road. Here's a breakdown of the costs:
- 30 mins Free
- 1 hour £1.50
- 2 hours £2.50
- 3 hours £3.50
Katie Bird, owner of Birdsmith Jewellery, expressed her worries, highlighting the already high cost of materials and the council's perceived poor financial management. She described the road changes as a 'complete debacle' and feels that the parking charges unfairly single out businesses. She fears she might have to close her business.
Mark Scales, from Contract Hire Ltd, echoed these sentiments, accusing the council of 'money-grabbing' and pointing to the rising costs for businesses. He even revealed plans to sell his rental properties due to tax changes.
Richard Fost from Timbercraft also voiced his concerns, calling the parking charges the 'biggest bone of contention' in the town and acknowledging the negative impact on visitors and trade.
And this is the part most people miss... North Somerset Council insists that the parking charges are unrelated to the seafront issues, claiming that they are part of a broader strategy to manage and maintain parking facilities, making them self-funding. The council's Parking Management Strategy, adopted in October 2024, aims to create 'well-managed, well-maintained parking facilities' and generate surplus funds for infrastructure improvements.
