Unveiling the Treasures of V&A East Storehouse: A Journey into the Extraordinary

Tim Reeve, the deputy director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, shares his dream of transforming storage spaces into places of wonder. And so, the V&A East Storehouse was born, a modern, industrial museum in the heart of east London.
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't your typical museum experience. The Storehouse invites visitors to step into a world of open shelves, where paintings, furniture, and even weapons and clothing are on display. It's a treasure trove of objects, each with its own story to tell.
One of the most exciting features is the 'Order an Object' service. Visitors can request up to five items and spend hours exploring them, even touching and handling them if they're not too delicate. It's a unique, intimate experience, bringing people closer to the art and history they love.
The response has been overwhelming. To date, the public has called upon 25,000 objects, from David Bowie's costumes to a grand red silk gown. And the joy is in the little moments, like hearing the 'ahh' of discovery when a box is opened.
And this is the part most people miss... The Storehouse isn't just about the famous and the delicate. It caters to all interests, from intense researchers counting threads to those who choose objects simply because they're cats! It's a place where people connect with history and art in their own unique ways.
Located within the 'East Bank' development, the Storehouse is open to everyone, regardless of age or background. It's a space where children from local schools can explore and learn, and where adults can reconnect with their inner child.
The success of the Storehouse has been made possible through generous philanthropic support. From the Bowie Archive to artistic commissions, these contributions have allowed the V&A to thrive and continue its mission of making art and history accessible to all.
In the past year alone, the V&A has acquired or been gifted over 5,000 objects and archives. It's a testament to the power of community and the importance of sharing and preserving our cultural heritage.
