Giants' Willy Adames Calls New Manager Tony Vitello "Rookie"! ⚾️ (2026)

In the world of Major League Baseball, change is often met with both excitement and skepticism. As the new manager of the San Francisco Giants, Tony Vitello is certainly under the spotlight, and fans are eager to see how he will perform in this pivotal role.

Recently, Vitello has been actively participating in fan engagement events known as Giants Fanfest, where he has had the opportunity to connect with supporters. Over the past two weekends, he has traveled to different locations, first visiting San Jose and then heading to San Pedro. His managerial appointment has generated intense scrutiny, more so than any other hiring this season, leading many San Francisco fans to approach the situation with a healthy dose of skepticism.

But here’s where it gets interesting: during one of the Q&A sessions at FanFest, Vitello shared a lighthearted moment when he revealed the nickname that shortstop Willy Adames has given him. According to Susan Slusser from the San Francisco Chronicle, Adames refers to Vitello simply as "rookie." This nickname, while not particularly imaginative, perfectly captures Vitello's situation—he truly is a newcomer in the major leagues, lacking any previous experience as a player, coach, or manager. This bold choice by the Giants' president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, marks a significant departure from traditional hiring practices in the sport.

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Vitello played college baseball at the University of Missouri before stepping into coaching. His career began as an assistant coach for the Tigers, where he notably worked with future superstar Max Scherzer. He later held assistant coaching positions at Texas Christian University (TCU) and the University of Arkansas, culminating in his first head-coaching role at the University of Tennessee in 2018.

Under his leadership, the Volunteers experienced a remarkable resurgence in college baseball, highlighted by an impressive 60-win season that led them to win the Men’s College World Series championship in 2024. Vitello also steered the program to the MCWS in both 2021 and 2023, securing two Southeastern Conference (SEC) championships during his tenure, which ended with a commendable record of 341 wins and 131 losses.

As he embarks on this new journey with the Giants, Vitello will be relying on seasoned players like Adames to help the team rise above the mediocrity of the past four seasons, especially after finishing with a mediocre 81-81 record in 2025. This disappointing performance ultimately resulted in the dismissal of former manager Bob Melvin, who had recently signed a one-year contract extension.

In 2025, Adames had a notable season, achieving a batting line of .225/.318/.421, with 30 home runs and 87 RBIs. This milestone marked him as the first Giants player since the legendary Barry Bonds in 2004 to hit 30 home runs in a single season. Although Rafael Devers outpaced him with 35 home runs, he joined the team mid-season following a trade in June. Adames' impressive stats also include 22 doubles, 2 triples, 12 stolen bases, and a career-high of 94 runs scored.

Importantly for Giants fans, Adames is not going anywhere anytime soon. Last offseason, he made headlines by signing a blockbuster seven-year contract worth $182 million, breaking the franchise record previously held by Posey.

What do you think about the Giants' decision to hire Tony Vitello? Is it a bold move that could pay off, or do you believe it might be too risky given his lack of major league experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
