The Man of Steel's Morality: A Controversial Twist?
In a recent interview, Grant Morrison, the renowned writer behind All-Star Superman, shared his thoughts on James Gunn's take on the iconic character, and it sparked an intriguing debate.
While David Corenswet's portrayal of Superman was generally well-received, Morrison, whose work inspired parts of the 2025 movie, had some reservations. He praised the film as "the best Superman movie yet," but highlighted certain aspects that left him with mixed feelings.
"It captured the essence of Superman, but there were choices made that I felt compromised his character," Morrison confessed. He expressed his dislike for the frequent beatings Superman endured, arguing that it undermined his invincibility and relatability. "I want to see him rise above and fight back," he added.
And here's where it gets controversial... Morrison took issue with the revelation of Superman's heritage, which mirrored the storyline of Invincible. He preferred the idea of Krypton as a lost utopia, wiped out by nature's fury, believing it added a poignant layer to the story.
"I found it upsetting that Superman's morality seemed so fragile, based on wish fulfillment," Morrison explained. But, thankfully, the film's final act redeemed itself in his eyes, as Superman's unwavering compass and inspiring speech to Lex Luthor left a positive impression.
So, what's next for Gunn's Superman and his arch-nemesis? With the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, set for release in 2027, we can expect to see Gunn explore new territories. The film will also introduce Braniac, played by Lars Eidinger, adding another layer of intrigue.
And this is the part most people miss... It's in these controversial interpretations and twists that the true essence of storytelling lies. What do you think? Is Superman's morality fragile, or is it a powerful force that can withstand any twist? Let us know in the comments!
