A historic castle in North Wales is urgently seeking support to fund essential repairs, launching a fundraising campaign with a target of £20,000. Gwydir Castle, located near Llanrwst, is a medieval structure that dates back to the 15th century and is now facing significant challenges due to years of heavy rainfall that have taken a toll on its integrity.
The castle’s owners, Peter Welford and Judy Corbett, have turned to GoFundMe to seek financial assistance for what they describe as "Emergency Repair Work To The Medieval Hall Range." The conditions have worsened recently, leading to substantial damage that requires immediate attention.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X, Judy reflected on their long journey of conserving this remarkable building over the past 32 years. She emphasized that Gwydir Castle has been transformed from a near-ruined state into a cherished historical site accessible to the public. However, she pointed out that unlike many historical estates, Gwydir does not have a supporting estate and receives no government funding or subsidies, relying solely on what they can raise for its upkeep.
"Unfortunately, the costs associated with restoration are increasing each year. While we are in the process of establishing a charity to aid in the ongoing maintenance of the house and gardens, we currently face a backlog of necessary repairs that must be addressed immediately," Judy wrote.
This winter has brought particularly severe conditions, causing water damage in multiple areas due to eroded pointing and storm effects. The couple is about to embark on a significant repair project focused on the chimneys, pointing, and stonework of the medieval hall range.
Peter and Judy, who acquired the castle in 1994, are reaching out for donations, expressing gratitude for any support offered. "If you are able to contribute in any way, we would be incredibly thankful. This extraordinary and atmospheric house brings joy and inspiration to many people around the world. With your help, we aim to secure Gwydir's future and maintain public access for generations to come," Judy shared.

A brief history of Gwydir Castle reveals that after the Wars of the Roses, it was reconstructed around 1490 by Meredith ap Ieuan ap Robert, a key figure in the Wynn dynasty and a prominent supporter of King Henry VII. In the 1570s, Gwydir became the residence of Katherine of Berain, known as 'The Mother of Wales' and cousin to Queen Elizabeth I. The castle is intertwined with several notable historical events, including the Babington Plot of 1586 and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. It has connections to influential figures such as the Earl of Leicester, Inigo Jones, the Bishop Morgan, who translated the first Welsh Bible, and Archbishop John Williams, who served as Lord Keeper under Charles I. Over a span of 200 years, it served as the ancestral home of the distinguished Wynn family.
