IndiGo's Flight Chaos: India's Response and the Impact on Passengers (2026)

India's airfare crisis: A tale of stranded passengers and a struggling airline

The recent chaos at IndiGo, India's largest airline, has left hundreds of passengers stranded and sparked a government intervention.

In a move to address the ongoing crisis, the Indian government has capped airfares as a response to the unprecedented number of flight cancellations by IndiGo. For five consecutive days, passengers have faced disruptions, with over 385 flights cancelled, leaving many stranded outside airports in Bengaluru and Mumbai.

But here's where it gets controversial: the root cause of this chaos lies in IndiGo's failure to plan for new rules limiting pilots' work hours. This has resulted in a severe shortage of pilots, leading to the cancellation of thousands of flights this week.

The government's response has been twofold. On Friday, they announced special relief measures for IndiGo and the operation of additional trains to alleviate the backlog. However, the situation remains dire, with flight cancellations continuing across the country.

And this is the part most people miss: with IndiGo's cancellations, fares on other airlines have skyrocketed. To maintain pricing discipline, the government has stepped in to cap airfares. The Civil Aviation Ministry has assured that they will closely monitor fare levels through real-time data and active coordination with airlines.

The last time airfares were capped was during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Now, the Indian government has set specific fare limits: a one-way journey up to 500 kilometers cannot exceed 7,500 rupees ($125), while a journey between 1,000 and 1,500 kilometers should be capped at 15,000 rupees ($251).

These limits are significantly lower than the prices advertised by other airlines, such as Air India, which was offering a Delhi-Mumbai flight for 20,419 rupees ($342) on Saturday.

The impact of these cancellations has been felt across India, with weddings disrupted as families and guests found themselves stranded at airports. Hundreds of passengers, some unaware of the cancellations, gathered outside Bengaluru and Mumbai airports on Saturday, according to Reuters witnesses.

Satish Konde, a passenger who had checked in for a connecting flight from Mumbai to Nagpur, shared his experience: "I am waiting for my luggage to be returned." Konde's story is just one of many affected by the chaos.

The new pilot rest and duty rules, which IndiGo has been exempted from until February 10, have been a point of contention. These rules limit night landings to two from six and restrict the maximum number of hours a pilot can fly at night to 10. Additionally, if a pilot takes personal leave, it cannot be counted towards their weekly rest period of 48 hours, a restriction that has been temporarily lifted for all airlines due to the IndiGo crisis.

Pilot labor groups have expressed their concerns, emphasizing that safety should not be compromised due to IndiGo's poor planning. The Airline Pilots Association of India has objected to the relief measures for IndiGo, calling it "selective dispensation." They argue that these norms exist to safeguard human life, as stated in a letter to the government.

While IndiGo struggles, other major Indian airlines, including Air India and Akasa, have not faced similar issues due to the new rules.
