Iran's Deadly Flu Outbreak: H3N2 Strain Claims Lives (2026)

A Deadly Flu Strain Spreads Across Iran: A Growing Concern

In a worrying development, Iran is facing a rapid spread of the H3N2 influenza strain, with tragic consequences. At least seven lives were lost in a single week in Yazd province, and the situation is far from contained.

The deaths, which occurred between November 29 and December 5, predominantly affected the elderly and those with pre-existing health issues. State media reports highlight the urgency of the matter, with 417 out of 850 tests returning positive results since Saturday alone.

The total number of cases in Yazd province this year has reached a staggering 1,118, resulting in 13 fatalities. But the impact isn't limited to Yazd; Hormozgan province has also reported at least two deaths from the A/H3N2 strain, including a young individual with no known underlying health conditions.

Here's where it gets controversial: more than half of the recent tests in Hormozgan have come back positive, indicating an "active and high-risk" phase. Yet, health officials have remained largely silent, with no official announcements regarding the surge in flu patients with severe lung involvement in Tehran hospitals, as reported by IranWire.

And this is the part most people miss: the North Khorasan Medical Sciences University, through the Mehr news agency, has confirmed a rise in H3N2 cases in their province. Infectious disease specialist Mino Moharez warns that this wave is more severe than in previous years, with influenza rapidly causing lung complications and death.

Moharez urges immediate action, advising those experiencing fever, body aches, cough, and severe headaches to seek medical attention promptly and stay away from work and school to curb the spread.

The situation is a stark reminder of the importance of public health awareness and swift action. With the potential for further spread and the severity of the strain, the question arises: Are the authorities doing enough to address this growing health crisis?
