James Cameron Clarifies Matt Damon's 'Avatar' Casting Misconception
James Cameron, the renowned director behind blockbuster hits like 'Avatar' and 'Titanic', has addressed a long-standing rumor surrounding Matt Damon's potential involvement in his iconic sci-fi epic. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron set the record straight, dispelling Damon's claim that he was offered a role in 'Avatar' and a percentage of the film's gross.
Cameron revealed that while he and Damon had a conversation about the project, it never progressed to a formal offer. Damon, who was committed to filming a 'Jason Bourne' movie, expressed his interest in collaborating with Cameron, but ultimately had to turn down the 'Avatar' opportunity due to scheduling conflicts.
"He was never offered the part," Cameron stated. "I can't remember if I sent him the script or not. I don't think I did. Then we wound up on a call, and he said, 'I love to explore doing a movie with you. I have a lot of respect for you as a filmmaker. ['Avatar'] sounds intriguing. But I really have to do this 'Jason Bourne' movie. I’ve agreed to it, it’s a direct conflict, and so, regretfully, I have to turn it down.'"
Cameron emphasized that the conversation remained at a preliminary stage, focusing solely on availability. He praised Damon's honesty and respect for the process, even though the actor never received an official offer.
Damon's previous statement, claiming he was offered 10% of 'Avatar', was a misinterpretation of the director's intentions. Cameron assured that if Damon had been willing to take a percentage of the film's gross, he would have been more than happy to accommodate, but it was never a factor in the decision-making process.
The role of the lead character ultimately went to Sam Worthington, who delivered memorable performances in the film and its sequels. 'Avatar' became a cultural phenomenon, grossing over $2.7 billion worldwide and holding the title of the highest-grossing film of all time for nine years until 'Avengers: Endgame' surpassed it.
This clarification highlights the intricate process of casting in the film industry, where availability and personal commitments can significantly impact an actor's involvement in a project. Despite the misunderstanding, Cameron and Damon maintain a positive relationship, with the director expressing admiration for the actor's work.
