Mark Robinson Responds to Criticism: NZR’s Decision-Making Under the Spotlight (2026)

Mark Robinson, the outgoing CEO of New Zealand Rugby, reflects on his six-year tenure, addressing public criticism and the challenges faced during his leadership. Robinson's interview with Jason Pine on Newstalk ZB's Weekend Sport radio show offers insight into his approach to handling criticism and the evolving role's demands.

Appointed in 2020, Robinson navigated a turbulent period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and various organizational challenges. He acknowledges that the initial years were more demanding, requiring him to learn how to manage public scrutiny effectively.

"Early on, it was quite challenging, but in the last four to five years, we've made significant progress," Robinson explained. "We've become clear about genuine errors and mistakes, accepting responsibility, learning from them, and moving forward. This approach has helped us stay on track, even in the face of criticism."

Despite the criticism, Robinson highlights the importance of transparency and accountability. He emphasizes that while they can't always share all information publicly, they strive to make the right decisions based on available data and strategic alignment.

"When things go wrong, we deserve criticism and scrutiny," he said. "It's part of the role's power, and people have a vested interest in New Zealand Rugby's success."

Robinson's tenure included significant moments, such as the All Blacks' coach change, which sparked public debate. He expresses comfort with their handling of the situation, citing comprehensive information and a clear understanding of the post-2023 Rugby World Cup context.

"The All Blacks coach change was a transformative moment in the sport," Robinson noted. "It was a privilege to be part of that process, and I'm confident in our decision-making throughout."

While Robinson is satisfied with his overall contributions, he acknowledges areas for improvement, particularly during the COVID-19 era. He believes they made the right strategic decisions but could have refined their processes in a highly scrutinized environment.

"We got a lot of things right during COVID, but there's always room for improvement," he concluded. "Looking back, we've invested in various aspects of the game, and we've made significant strides, even amidst the challenges."
