Get ready for an intense battle as the Steelers take on the Ravens in Week 14! But here's a curveball: the Steelers are missing some key defensive starters due to injuries.
Safety Kyle Dugger is out with a hand injury, and defensive lineman Derrick Harmon is also inactive, missing his second consecutive game due to a knee issue. Their absence leaves a void on the field, especially when facing the Ravens' dynamic duo of running back Derrick Henry and quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin emphasized the importance of solid team defense: "It's not just one person or one area that determines great run defense. It's the entire team working together. We need to be sharp and focused if we want to succeed."
The Steelers' receiving corps is also undergoing some changes. Adam Thielen, recently claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, is active and ready to make an impact. Coach Mike Tomlin praised Thielen's experience and track record: "He's a proven player with a strong body of work."
On the other hand, receiver Roman Wilson is inactive for today's game. To bolster their receiving options, the Steelers elevated Marquez Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad. Valdes-Scantling, a veteran with eight seasons of experience, has played for multiple teams, including the Packers, Chiefs, Bills, Saints, and 49ers. His addition brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the Steelers' offense.
In addition to the defensive injuries, the offensive line is also dealing with some setbacks. Tackle Broderick Jones is on the Reserve/Injured List, and Calvin Anderson is inactive due to a knee injury. Andrus Peat, who signed with the Steelers during training camp, steps in for his second start of the season at left tackle. Peat, a seasoned veteran, is confident and prepared: "I always stay ready for any situation. It's a great opportunity, and I'm excited to contribute."
The team has also elevated offensive tackle Dylan Cook from the practice squad to provide depth. Cook, an undrafted free agent, has an impressive college career, starting 23 of 27 games at Montana and earning Academic All-Big Sky honors twice. His experience and versatility will be valuable assets for the Steelers.
