Imagine a place where people with diverse backgrounds and abilities come together, united by a shared passion for the ocean and the thrill of riding waves. This is the vision brought to life by Sascha de Lacy-Koenig, founder of Sacha's Surf Experience in Albany, Western Australia.
But here's where it gets controversial: de Lacy-Koenig believes that surfing is more than just a sport; it's a powerful tool for personal growth and community building. And he's not alone in this belief.
Meet Max Forster-Ross, a passionate surfer and NDIS participant. When asked about his experience, he exclaimed, "It's just bloody awesome!" Max's enthusiasm is infectious, and his story is a testament to the transformative power of surfing.
"I used to be a gamer, but now I'm out in the ocean three times a week," Max shared. "Surfing has given me a new lease on life. I feel young again, and I've made so many friends. I know half of Albany now!"
And this is the part most people miss: surfing isn't just about the physical act of riding waves. It's about the decisions you make, the goals you set, and the community you build.
"When you're surfing, you're constantly making choices," de Lacy-Koenig explained. "Which wave to ride, which board to use—these decisions translate to other areas of life. We encourage our participants to apply these skills beyond the ocean."
The surf school's unique approach brings together NDIS participants and non-NDIS surfers, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can learn and grow together. Monique Blaikie, a regular at the school, attests to the power of this community.
"Even on tough days, I know I have friends out there cheering me on," Monique said. "Surfing has transformed my life. I used to be afraid of the water, but now I call myself an ocean person. It's become part of my identity."
Riley Coffey, another mentor and participant, joined the program to surf with his son but quickly became a mentor to others. "Surfing is a lifelong joy," he said. "It's not like other sports that become more competitive as you age. Surfing is about enjoyment and going at your own pace."
