Setefano Mooniai Leaaetoa, 25, allegedly stabbed three people on a busy Merrylands street, resulting in one fatality, just days after escaping during a transfer to Westmead Hospital's emergency department. In a separate tragedy, Luke Peter Francis, 31, is accused of causing a fatal car crash in Camden that claimed the lives of a 60-year-old woman and her 84-year-old passenger. Francis had also escaped from Cumberland Hospital a week prior, reportedly after threatening a nurse and taking an access card.
The statistics are stark: According to data from NSW Health, patients are three times more likely to abscond from Cumberland Hospital than from any other mental health unit in the state. While the average escape rate for acute mental health units in NSW is one patient every 4,348 days, Cumberland Hospital sees a patient disappear every 1,333 days.
