A tragic accident occurred just days before Christmas, resulting in the untimely deaths of two men, as revealed during an inquest. On December 20, Mathew James Hardy, aged 34 and hailing from Abererch in Pwllheli, alongside 40-year-old Daniel Atkinson from Blaenau Ffestiniog, both lost their lives in a head-on collision on the A487 Porthmadog bypass.
In the initial proceedings of the inquest, North West Wales' senior coroner, Kate Roberston, provided insights into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Mr. Hardy, who worked as a mechanic, was driving northbound in an Isuzu recovery truck towards Tremadog when it is believed that another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction struck his truck.
Ms. Roberston noted that Mr. Atkinson, also employed in the mechanics field, was heading south in a Volkswagen Golf when the crash occurred. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but sadly, both men were pronounced dead around 21:45 GMT on the evening of the incident.
The coroner indicated that she had requested post-mortem examinations for both individuals. While awaiting further details regarding Mr. Hardy's case, she confirmed that Mr. Atkinson's preliminary cause of death was determined to be multiple injuries sustained during the crash.
As investigations into this tragic event are ongoing, the inquest concerning the two men has been temporarily adjourned. This incident raises critical questions about road safety and the potential measures that could prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
