The Sky's Big Show: Ursids Meteor Shower Peaks on Monday, December 22
Get ready for a celestial spectacle! The Ursid meteor shower is set to peak on Monday, December 22, offering a chance to witness shooting stars under dark skies. While it may not be as dazzling as the Geminids, the Ursids are still a sight to behold.
But here's the intriguing part: the Ursids' radiant point is near the cup of the Little Dipper, which is positioned below the Big Dipper early in the morning. This unique location makes it a bit more challenging to spot, but with a little guidance, you can find it.
The Ursids are a short-lived affair, active for only about a week, and peak this morning under dark, moonless skies. Despite having a lower rate of meteors compared to the Geminids, it's still worth stepping outside before sunrise to catch a glimpse. The radiant is visible all night, so you can watch for meteors late on the 21st and again in the evening.
To locate the radiant, find the Big Dipper in the northern sky and look beneath its cup. You'll discover the smaller cup of the Little Dipper, which appears to pour into the Big Dipper as the stars move around the North Celestial Pole, anchored by Polaris.
But that's not all! Comet 24P/Schaumasse is also making an appearance around December 23, glowing at approximately 11th magnitude as it prepares to enter the Virgo Cluster. Currently positioned in far southwestern Coma Berenices, it's located 1.7 degrees northwest of the M98 galaxy, which is slightly brighter at magnitude 10.1. The comet will pass through a region rich with other galaxies, including M99 and M100, throughout the month.
These astronomical events coincide with the winter solstice on December 21, with a 9% waxing crescent Moon in the sky. So, mark your calendars and get ready to explore the wonders of the night sky!
