Research reveals a compelling story. A recent LinkedIn survey of 2,000 Australians sheds light on this phenomenon. The findings indicate that 59% plan to remain in their current jobs through 2026, a noticeable increase from 51% the previous year. This suggests a growing preference for stability over the potential of a new role.
One of the biggest drivers behind this trend is the tough job market. Four out of five Australians admit they feel unprepared for a job search. Furthermore, over a third express concerns about the increasing role of AI in the hiring process. And this is the part most people miss... Seven out of ten Australians believe it has become more challenging to find a job in the past year.
Economic uncertainty is the primary reason Australians are hesitant to switch jobs. As Brendan Wong, a LinkedIn career expert, explains, "After the 'Great Resignation,' we are seeing the opposite behaviour. Australians are job hugging - staying in roles they might have otherwise left because the market feels uncertain and highly competitive." He adds, "When four in five people say they feel unprepared to job hunt, it's not surprising many are choosing stability over risk."
Interestingly, the survey also explored the impact of AI on job searching. While many are wary, 43% of Gen Z job seekers believe AI-led interviews would make them less nervous. Wong advises job seekers to familiarize themselves with AI, as it is "shaping almost every part of the job search, from finding roles to being pre-screened by recruiters and preparing for interviews." He suggests starting small.
